Start with the first idea, and master it with all eight etudes. Play the melody with the LEFT FOOT on the hi-hat, and keep time with the ride skip pattern (LH / RF do nothing). Play the melody with the right FOOT on the bass drum, and keep time with the ride skip pattern and 2&4 in your left foot (LH does nothing).Play the melody with the LH on the snare drum, and keep time with the ride skip pattern and 2&4 in your left foot. The ideas I'll give you apply to the "melody line" (where the snare is usually written) in each etude. These eight etudes are essentially an amalgam of all the exercises in the book, but in a musical context. I'm not sure where you are as a player, but I would start around page 38 or so, wherever the "etudes" begin. Syncopation is a fantastic book with a ton of applications, so if I were to give you a single catch all "use" for it I'd be doing you a disservice.
